Is Prescribing Beta-Blockers before Heart Bypass Surgery a Good Idea?
This week, a story appeared on Philly.com written by HealthDay reporter Steven Reinberg . In this article, Reinberg reports that a new study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, indicates that beta blockers, taken a day before bypass surgery, may do nothing to improve the results. Rather, these drugs may actually result in higher rates of atrial fibrillation.
These finding are in contradiction to the findings of other studies on this subject, however, and warrant more investigation before the discontinuation of this practice can be recommended. The article is interesting and this is a topic worth following.
